Lynn Chamber of Commerce Has Spacious New Office
Janaury 14, 2002

The Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce’ move to Munroe Street meets practical needs but carries symbolic significance.

The organization’s former quarters in the Security Exchange building included a conference room too small to seat the Chamber’s board of directors. The 100 Oxford St. office includes a large conference room that looks out on Beden Hardware, one of downtown’s small business success stories.

The new office in the refurbished Goldblock side of Munroe is located off the ground floor foyer that opens onto a new Oxford Street plaza as well as Munroe. Chamber Director Kevin Donahue and his three assistants officially open the office tomorrow.

“We have a lot more visibility and a chance to be much more of an asset to the community,” Donahue said.

The chamber’s move comes amidst continuing changes in the downtown landscaping. Two once great lower Union Street commercial buildings are destined for new uses. The Rooks building has been razed for a parking lot and the Hoffman’s building is slated for demolition following a fire last fall.

The U.S. Postal Service has yet to unveil plans to add an addition onto the former Whyte’s Laundry site on Willow Street, but the city is ten months away from starting construction on a new police station between Washington and Stewart Streets.

The existing station on Sutton Street will be razed to provide additional parking for Lynn District Court.
