EDIC Request Additional EPA Brownfields Funding
Daily Item, December 16, 2001

Lynn-The Economic Development Industrial Corporation (EDIC/Lynn), which has benefited from more than $700,000 in brownfields redevelopment funding form the federal Environmental Protection Agency, has applied for another round of EPA brownfields funding.

The current application marks the sixth time since 1993 the EDIC has requested assistance from a variety of sources for brownfields redevelopment. The EDIC and the Lynn Community Development Housing Corp. recently celebrated the groundbreaking for five new homes at the former Empire Laundry brownfields site on Myrtle Street. EPA funding played a major role in that project.

Similar to the Myrtle Street project, the EDIC will be working with the Conservation Law Foundation in utilizing the grant money.
The areas of concentration will be those targeted in the city's Downtown Comprehensive Plan, Enterprise Zone Application and Empowerment Zone Application.

EDIC Executive Director Peter DeVeau said the city would be asking for a minimum of $200,000 in funding to be used for assessment of brownfields, which are areas that have been contaminated by industrial use over the years.

The EDIC will be reviewing the preliminary submission at its December board meeting. The final submission will be sent in late January.

The city's brownfields task force will meet early next year to determine ranking criteria for the sites under consideration.
